Save Money by Using Water Wisely

Common Sense. A lot of the "rules" governing the conservation of water, thus saving yourself money, is basic common sense.

Watch your water consumption:

1. When brushing your teeth, do not leave the water running! You would be amazed at how much water can run through your faucet in two minutes! It adds up.

2. If your toilet is running, check the plunger arm. Make a slight adjustment to stop the flow of water. Again, if left unchecked, it will run gallons of water in hours.

3. It is best to water your lawn in the early morning (before the hot sun comes out) or in the evening. This is a no-brainer. If the sun is hot and baking your lawn, it is evaporating all of the water you are pouring onto it.

4. Water your lawn for only 20 minutes each day. This will provide your lawn with enough moisture to feed it.

5. Don't fertilize your lawn too much because that will lead to excessive growth. More growth means the need for more water.

6. Don't cut your grass too short. Long blades of grass will shade the roots; causing less evaporation.

7. Check your sprinkler system for leaks and proper operation.

8. If the kids are bored and they want to run through the sprinkler, have them do so during the early evening hours when you are already watering the grass.

9. Limit your showers. Two minutes here and two minutes there really add up. (Think about the brushing of the teeth.) The less water you use, the more you save!

10. Don't water on windy days. Water that is being blown away is not getting onto your lawn. Up to 300 gallons in one sprinkling can be blown away. That's a lot of money being wasted over time!!

Remember, a little common sense will save you a lot of money!
